Jul 05, 2017 A third view is to establish the primary bevel with the Tormek SG grinding wheel and then add a micro bevel using the Tormek SJ polishing wheel. In my opinion, establishing the two reference points with a hollow grind to allow alignment of the blade on a flat stone does not reflect Tormek

The result is a bevel edge with a completely flat surface, instead of a hollow grind. When sharpening on the side of the Diamond Wheels, we recommend using the Tormek Multi Base MB-100 with the appropriate jig developed for your specific tool. The combination of the Multi Base and jig gives you complete support and control when sharpening.

Hollow Grinding: Necessity or Relic? Just received my new set of chisels from you guys, and I understand they need sharpening before they're ready to use. I've learned enough about sharpening to know that I need to hollow-grind the bevels before I hone them. Just one problem: I don't have a grinder. Can you suggest another way to create a ...

This jig is designed especially for long and flexible knives such as filleting knives. It works the same way the Tormek Knife Jig works, but its larger width, 5-1/2" (140mm), stabilizes a long and thin blade. The jig handles blades at least 6-1/4" (160mm) in length. For use with the Tormek T-7 and T-3. Jig for sharpening long, thin knives

Dec 20, 2006 Hollow grinding and "scary sharp" aren't mutually exclusive. The hollow grind means less steel to sharpen, and it's a little easier to hold at a proper angle without a sharpening guide. Try sharpening two chisels, one with and one without a hollow grind, and see which you prefer.

Apr 21, 2016 I have finally convinced myself I need a better option for rough shaping my tools and would like to start hollow grinding my chisels, planes and turning tools to make sharpening by hand faster. I was all ready to buy a grinder, two new wheels and the Tormek grinder attachment but when I added up the prices I am getting into the range of ...

Apr 08, 2018 Of course, the Tormek is going to hollow-grind the bevel and the stone will try to flatten it. Anyway, this precipitated a series of experiments. I would lengthen the distance from the guide to the tip of the bevel on the Tormek—same thing—stone ground only the back edge. Tried shortening the amount of the blade exposed and got the same result.

It is a Chinese rip off of a tormek, but it is built impressively. the motor probably isn't built as good as in a tormek, but I figure I am not in the sharpening business. Since I only need to hollow grind probably twice a year, sharpen a few knives, etc. a buddy of mine says all the tormek sharpening systems will fit

Dec 30, 2019 Don’t give up on the super grind 2000 it will take some time to learn all the tricks. When you have a hollow grind on your blade use the side sharpening technique it’s worth the time to learn. Trying to match up a angle from the tormek to a guide can be done but it’s just not worth the time.

Mar 26, 2010 My opinion is a bit different. I like the tormek type system ok only for use with some knives. I dislike using it for anything else. I've used it to put a perfect hollow grind on some folding skinners. I then skipped the leather wheel and proceeded to a paper wheel setup with a tormek bar.

The cambered grinding wheel only makes contact in a small area, so you're sweeping the blade back and forth across that high spot on the grinding wheel. I guess in theory, if the back is flat and the hollow grind is inconsistent along the width, it won't matter because a 1000 grit stone will even out all the peaks and valleys on the working ...

May 23, 2020 I’m so used to flat honing, I balk at the Tormek because of the resulting hollow grind. I’m not sure how much that should bother me I know both machines claim to do much more than primary bevels at roughly 300 grit, but that’s all I need at present.

For many years I’ve hollow-ground my chisel and plane blades before honing the cutting edge with waterstones. I prefer a slow speed wet-grinder to create the hollow grind. I’ve used many different ones, but they all fall short of the Tormek T-8, which Tormek describes as a water-cooled sharpening system.

These 10'' wheels are a full 2'' wide and designed to fit your Tormek grinder. No water should be used when sharpening with CBN, meaning less mess. Features: 1'' flats on both sides of the wheel for flattening chisel backs and any other non-hollow grinding applications; CBN wheels will never change shape—no need to dress the wheel or true it up

May 18, 2007 You can hone quite a few times before the hollow is gone and grinding is necessary. Sharpening should not require spending big money. IMO it is sold as a black art that needs all manner of paraphernalia that is designed to take cash that could be better spent on

Step #1 - CBN wheel for grinding - to the edge of the blade. It is warmer than a Tormek, but cool enough to hold in the hand, and much much faster in the grind. The final hollow is slightly deeper (8" radius vs 10" radius), and the upside of this is that a honing will last slightly longer.

May 08, 2020 Tormek appear to have read the writing on the wall by introducing diamond wheels. The fact is that the BGM-100 adds all the Tormek jigs and strategies to a much faster bench grinder. Even a half-speed with CBN is not foolproof in preventing excess heat, but a little care (light touch) and the pros far outnumber the cons. ... hollow grind on a ...

The grinding wheel of the T4 is 8″ x 1 5/8” (200×40 mm) instead of the standard 10″ x 2” (250×50 mm). It features a ceramic build grindstone wheel with 220 grit aluminum oxide. This smaller-sized wheel gives the tool’s edge a more noticeable hollow grind compared to T8.

Oct 08, 2015 My point was that the Tormek will put a hollow grind on a knifes edge. Or any edge for that matter. So its not a true v or chisel grind. Close but still slightly hollow on a knife. The larger the area sharpened the hollow grind becomes larger. Your WE

Nov 01, 2019 It’s a good path for anyone who wants to develop free hand sharpening. Its easy peasy to balance the tool on your favorite stone with a hollow. My plane blades go many sharpening before I need to create the hollow again. I like the tormek my super grind 2000 has been converted to a slow buffing machine. I completely wore it out after two stones.

Jun 05, 2019 Great buy, and great long-term investment if you use it anywhere near to its' full potential.(jigs) I bought my Tormek Super-Grind 2000 roughly 25 years ago, and it's still like new. If I'm not mistaken, the machine was originally designed for a 25,000 hour service life.
