
Bougainville Island (Tok Pisin: Bogenvil) is the main island of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville of Papua New Guinea, also known as Bougainville Province.It formed the main landmass of the German Empire-associated North Solomons.With four to five hundred-metre-width-strait separated Buka Island (c.500 km 2) its land measures 9,300 km 2 (3591 sq miles).

The autonomous Papua New Guinea region of Bougainville has rejected controversial changes to its Mining Act, which were said to be aimed at letting a new company extract the island’s riches.

Sep 07, 2004 Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) is a mining company of Papua New Guinea (PNG) that is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). BCL operated the copper, gold and silver mine at the Panguna mine on Bougainville Island in PNG from 1971 to 1989. Mining operations were officially halted on 15 May 1989, due to militant activity and the mine has remained closed since.

It was based on an agreement, (Bougainville Copper Agreement) made between the company and the Papua New Guinea administration and ratified by the House of Assembly in 1967.
