At present 18 refineries are working in several locations. All these (except one) are entirely controlled by the Government of India. Among the 18 refineries, 3 are situated in Assam, 2 in Maharashtra and 1 each in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Kerala, respectively (one private refinery is owned by Reliance Co.).



Since then oil refining in India has progressed at a rapid pace. Today there are 19 refineries in the country, 17 in the public sector, one in joint sector and one in private sector. The installed refining capacity was only 0.3 million tonnes in 1950-51 which rose to 121.8 million metric tonnes in 2003-04.

--India's IOC is exploring an option to build a petroleum coke gasification plant at its Paradip refinery on India's east coast. IOC's $2.3 billion expansion project for the refinery to raise its overall capacity to 18 million mt/year from 13.7 million mt/year by 2020 is on schedule.
